A Special Visit to Glengarry: Building Community Through Connection

At Jack and Jill Kindergarten, we believe in the power of community and the value of creating meaningful intergenerational connections. This week, the children from the Possum room had the wonderful opportunity to venture beyond the preschool gates for an excursion to Glengarry, a local aged care home nestled in our community.
The anticipation was high as we prepared for our walk. Each child was paired with a special buddy, and together they held hands tightly, making a promise not to let go of each other until we returned. It was a beautiful moment of shared responsibility and trust, and the children walked with pride and purpose all the way to Glengarry.
As we arrived, we were greeted with warm smiles and open arms by the residents and staff. There was a genuine sense of joy in the air, and we could feel how much our visit was appreciated even before we began our activities.
Gathering in the outdoor courtyard, the children stood together and performed the songs they had been practising in the weeks leading up to the visit. Their sweet voices filled the space as they sang You Are My Sunshine, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and The ABC Song. The residents clapped along and beamed with delight, their faces lighting up with every note. It was a beautiful reminder of how music can bridge generations and create moments of shared joy.
Following the performance, the children handed out colourful picture card gifts they had created with care. Each elderly resident received one, and the gratitude on their faces was unmistakable. One resident, an artist himself, was so touched that he gifted the children a beautiful hand-drawn picture of an echidna. This sparked a curious conversation among the children about the difference between echidnas and hedgehogs—a spontaneous learning moment we hadn’t planned, but one we warmly welcomed.
While some children explored the facility with one of our educators, others stayed outside to play games with a vibrant rainbow parachute, read a favourite dinosaur book, and enjoy a little afternoon tea of cookies and juice. These shared experiences, simple as they may seem, brought laughter and joy to both the children and the residents.
Before we said our goodbyes, we took time to exchange gifts with our new friends and promised to return for another visit. There was a real sense of connection and kindness that lingered as we walked back to the kindergarten, hand in hand once again.
Excursions like this are so much more than a change of scenery—they offer opportunities for children to engage with the wider world, to practise empathy, build confidence, and understand the importance of community and care.
We are incredibly proud of how respectful, caring, and enthusiastic the children were throughout the experience. This visit to Glengarry will be remembered not just for the songs and gifts, but for the smiles, conversations, and bonds that were shared.
